Hi,
Due to everyone's remarkable generosity and messages of support, Bryan and Andy successfully completed every stage of Guadarun! The climate was just as daunting as lining up next to our fellow competitors, everyone a veteran of multi-day racing including 10 French Navy, Marine Commando's!
Despite problems in the first few stages with the extreme heat Andy never faultered and went from strength to strength. In Day 4, he tackled the 1087m ascent of a mountain in the heart of the rain forest with the grit and determination of a true athlete before gliding through the final day's race with a broad smile on his face. He finished 15th overall, the professional soldiers and veteran athletes that lie beneath him on the leaderboard give a more accurate reflection of his remarkable performance.
Bryan recovered from severe cramps after a navigation error on Day 2 which left him short of water miles from the finish. Day 3 was a psychological turning point where he gained the confidence to open a gap between himself and the faster runners allowing him to claim 1st place on the 34km stage. Podium finishes in the final two days gave Bryan the consistent times required to claim the Guadarun 2008 Championship in an overall time of 14hours, 13minutes and 10 seconds, 17 minutes clear of Pascal Colin who finished in 2nd place.
Andy and Bryan chose to do something difficult but it's nothing compared to the daily struggle of families affected by childhood cancer. Anyone can help, you don't have to run up a mountain or even walk to the bank ,just put you hand into your pocket and give a little of your hard earned cash. If everyone that reads this donates the price of a pint or a glass of wine it will make a huge difference to a sick child's quality of life.
