Eric & Karen originally Kenya in April 2010 for a holiday.
We saw first hand the poverty which effects so many people in Kenya. That holiday changed our outlook on life and we are now making a small difference.
We returned to Kenya in October 2010, one week of which was spent with the children at the the first safe house built by Harambee For Kenya in 2009 in the city of Kissi, in North East Kenya (near Lake Victoria).
"Harambee" means lets all pull together in Swahili.
Harambee For Kenya was the vision of our friends Roger & Lesley Dann from Heathfield, East Sussex.
In less than three years Harambee For Kenya has obtained charity status in the UK and NGO charity status in Kenya and built the Kissi safe house which is fully operational.
We are now raising £35,000 to buy land and build a second safe house in Meru (Northern Kenya).
Each safe house provides accommodation for 50 boys between the ages of 7 and 17.
The children have many different stories. Some have been abused or forced out of home. Some are orphans because of AIDs (which effects around 14% of the local population).
The children were all at risk from living rough in the city. They had no shelter or money to buy food.
Thanks to Harambee For Kenya there is a safe house in their time of need.
The ultimate goal of Harambee For Kenya is to have a safe house in every Kenyan Urban area which has a problem with street children.
