Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
We are not runners but we've both decide to give ourselves the life goal of running a half marathon. The training has been painful and hard work but will all be worth it when we cross the finishing line knowing we have raised funds to help people in extreme poverty. People who don't know what it is to turn a light on by a switch or fall asleep not feeling damp and cold.
The charity we are sponsoring is called Habitat for Humanity. Hattie worked in their marketing department and learnt first hand the conditions some people were facing. "I saw for myself video recordings taken from the field and emails that came through from charity offices in countries with people in desperate need. Children climbing burning piles of rubbish with needles and glass in infected cuts in their hands and feet as they had no shoes whilst searching for bits to sell for food. These children slept on a dumpsite in Cambodia."
It may seem a million miles away from you, but this is not some horrible fantasy, if only it was! This is a reality happening right now as you sit at your computer in a warm dry room. The difficulties we face from this 'credit crunch' don't even come close to those faced everyday by families in desperate poverty. You can do something about it and the money you donate to us will not just go to one family to build them a house- This charity is different- the money recycles to keep on benefiting family after family after family.
Habitat for Humanity works to eliminate poverty worldwide by building houses and teaching skills to the worlds poorest people to empower them to work for themselves to a sustainable happy future. This charity really has found the holistic solution to world poverty and bit by bit they are improving the lives of millions. The great part is every penny that goes into building a house is recycled, as each family benefiting from a new home learns skills in helping to build it themselves and then takes those skills to build homes for others in a 'sweat equity' scheme . If those living in a Habitat for Humanity house become able to afford it, they are also asked to contrbute back to habitat to build more houses. And so the money recycles.
