This navigational challenge is being undertaken by Sion Jair, an Alzheimer sufferer for some years, and his partner Wendy Kolbe. Sion and Wendy are in their 60s, Sion is in his mid to late 60s, he is physically very fit and he climbs mountains almost every day which has helped to delay the effects of the illness. One of the main symptoms that Sion suffers from is difficulties in directational and spacial awareness, especially in unfamiliar places, so this marathon can be particularly challenging.
The purpose of this marathon is to show how people diagnosed with Alzheimer don’t have to worry unnecessarily that their life is over. With physical and mental efforts the effects of the illness can be delayed considerably in some cases. We want to help people diagnosed with this disease to become aware that there is still a lot that they can do to enjoy life. The most serious aspects can be delayed, “The physical activity helps me think more clearly and be more mentally aware. Mental agility follows the physical activity, it’s only when I stop the physical activity for any length of time that I begin to suffer more acutely with the memory and mental aspects of the disease” says Sion.
