Story
Children with Cancer
Why Your Help Matters This Ramadan
After more than 13 years of conflict, Syria’s healthcare system has been severely damaged. Many hospitals have been destroyed, medical staff have fled, and essential medicines are often unavailable. For children diagnosed with cancer, this situation can be life-threatening.
Before the war, Syria had specialized cancer treatment centers and better access to medication. Today, many of those facilities are either damaged, overwhelmed, or lacking equipment.
The Reality for Children with Cancer
It is estimated that over 2,500–3,000 children in Syria are diagnosed with cancer each year.
Many children cannot receive proper treatment because hospitals lack chemotherapy drugs, equipment, or trained specialists.
According to humanitarian reports, more than 40–50% of childhood cancer cases struggle to access consistent treatment due to displacement, poverty, and damaged healthcare infrastructure.
Families often cannot afford transportation, medicine, or accommodation near treatment centres.
In many cases, parents must choose between buying food for the family or paying for medical treatment for their child.
The Impact of War
Since the war began:
More than half of Syria’s hospitals have been damaged or destroyed.
Millions of people have been displaced, making regular treatment extremely difficult.
Many children miss critical stages of chemotherapy or diagnosis because healthcare services are limited.
For children with cancer, delayed treatment can mean the difference between life and death.
