Story
In 2021 we had to close, as the quality of the pool water had deteriorated following the surge in the number of swimmers after the COVID restrictions were lifted.
The issue was that our small fast rate filters (fast isn't good when it comes to filtering) couldn't cope with everyone who wanted to swim. Since then we have often had to reduce our capacity to help maintain the water quality - so often people couldn't swim because we were 'full'.
Added to this, our 1968 plant room roof had expired with just a plastic sheet trying to keep it water tight and the electrics needed a full re-wire. The pool uses a lot of electricity to circulate water through the filters and financially is still struggling to come to terms with recent hikes in energy costs.
So what we needed was new larger filters, a new roof, new electrics and solar panels - funding has come from North Yorkshire Council & Helmsley Town Council, matched with the pools own funds. However we need your help to get us over the finishing line and if we reach our target we will hold our 2024 swim prices for all of the 2025 season. Names of all doners will go on a plaque on the plant room with those giving over £90 asked if they would like a 'brick sizes' plaque too.
This is a massive investment for the pool in sustainable energy, improving the water quality and increasing our weekly capacity for more swimmers, along with a once in 50 year cost of a new roof. Every £5, £10 or £20 is a massive help. There are only around 100 lidos left in the UK and whilst the are sustainable, captial projects like these need everyones' help.
