Story
Licoricia was a member of the nationally significant medieval Jewish community in Winchester and the most famous of its successful businesswomen. She was a highly educated wife and mother and raised funds for Henry III and Queen Eleanor as well as a number of national and local projects.
To date we have erected our statue of Licoricia by Ian Rank Broadley FRSS, published our book (Licoricia of Winchester: Power and Prejudice in Medieval England, by well-known author Rebecca Abrams), and developed lessons for Key Stage 3 pupils with Hampshire County Council.
We're now raising money to continue to educate about the Licoricia's life and times and its lessons for today.
Our aims:
To educate about England's and Winchester's important but forgotten medieval Jewish Community.
Inform about Winchester's significant Royal medieval past.
Promote religious tolerance and the value of diversity in the community.
Inspire women and young people, and promote education in providing opportunity
Be of national interest and a lasting enhancement to the city of Winchester.
Informing those who visit the statue is a great opportunity, and we aim to install an information board close to Licoricia, and develop more lessons for children, develop further lessons for children and hold educational events.
