About New Earswick Swimming Pool
New Earswick Swimming Pool is York’s only community‑run swimming facility and a registered Asset of Community Value. Opened in 1967 through local fundraising, it was saved from closure in 2019 and is now operated by the volunteer‑led charity Friends of New Earswick Swimming Pool (FoNESP).
Our role in the community
The pool welcomes around 1,000 visitors each week and supports swimmers of all ages and abilities. We work with schools, clubs, community groups, charities, a university, and a care home, and we host lifeguard and swim‑teacher training. We’re proud to offer inclusive sessions, including disabled swimming, transgender swimming, and ladies‑only sessions, and primary‑school children swim for free.
Why we’re fundraising
Over the last six years, FoNESP has invested nearly £400,000 in essential improvements. However, the building is ageing and now requires major refurbishment to remain viable for the next generation.
Our top priority is replacing the old, leaking flat roofs over the pool and changing areas and installing solar panels to reduce running costs. Once complete, we also plan to:
1. Repair the pool tank and poolside walkways
2. Replace corroded pool pipework
3. Renew the plant‑room roof
4. Modernise the outdated changing rooms to improve privacy and accessibility
Our initial fundraising target is £500,000.
