Swift City Project - Old Town Poole

In the UK, Swifts are struggling to find nest sites in our modern buildings, resulting in a 50% decline since 1995. We have secured 1/2 the funding needed to install specially made Swift boxes across Poole Old Town. Help us to help Swifts in Poole!

Story

Common Swifts (Apus apus) are sadly not so common these days, and are included on the Amber List of the UK's Birds of Conservation Concern as their breeding population has declined by 50% since 1995. One of the major problems facing Swifts is a lack of nesting sites - our modern buildings simply don't have the nooks, crannies and cavities that Swifts need to build their nests in.

In partnership with Saltwater Stone, we're putting up specially designed Swift nesting boxes in specific locations throughout Old Town Poole and playing Swift calls to encourage them to use them.

This will form a long-term project to attempt to secure the Old Town Poole Swift population. With a little bit of time, we hope to significantly supplement the existing colony, and safeguard the future of Swifts performing acrobatics and screaming down the High Street in numbers.

About the charity

Birds of Poole Harbour was set up in 2013 to boost the profile of bird conservation, education & observation in the Poole Harbour area. We specialise in high standard people engagement work and broader conservation projects & species research, including monitoring & analysis of bird populations.
