As a sanctuary, we do have a non-breeding policy for ethical and practical reasons, but, as was the case with Lottie, sometimes donkeys are already in foal when they arrive with us. Poor Lottie was in a very bad way when we took her in... She had spent many miserable years as an unlicensed beach donkey, forced to give rides to holidaymakers and was depressed and emaciated on arrival at our sanctuary. It is likely that she was previously used as a breeding Jenny, so we know that she will have had many babies cruelly taken from her over the years. This time will be different though – safe at our sanctuary, Mum and baby will be given all the specialised care and attention they need and Lottie will never have to face the tragedy of having her baby taken away from her ever again.
