Story
We are fortunate to have friends in both Kenya and Zambia who run health clinics which provide essential medical treatment to some very poor people - treatment they would otherwise simply not receive. In Zambia we also have the opportunity to support an orphanage which provides a home and education to over 160 children who have lost their parents mainly to HIV/AIDS.
We know personally the people who run the projects - they are local and understand the needs of their community. Every penny raised will go to where it is most needed.
The idea is to provide 'retail therapy' for these projects. For example we can go shopping for:
- a bag of maize will feed 163 children for 2 days - £8
- essential postnatal care for mother and child - £10
- immunisation injections - measles - 0.56p, polio 0.86p,
- materials for one child to attend school for one term - £4.20
- test one person for HIV, enabling early treatment - £1.25
