My story

We did it! Sore legs, one trip to A&E and some very happy faces at the finish line.

Thank you to everyone who supported the team. Those who have given so generously, the team at Bianchi, GB Cycles and BikeFood.

The Cycle Team.

In July we wrote...

We’re cycling from Glasgow to London to raise money for Action Against Hunger, the charity that is trying to eradicate child malnutrition around the world. It’s 500 gruelling miles and a lot of very steep hills so we have teamed up with Bianchi cycles to make it happen.

We have seen the profound positive effects our support can have, helping children overcome malnutrition and go on to lead happy healthy lives. So we are getting on our bikes and pedalling all the way from Glasgow to London. All you need to do is sponsor us.

Since 2008 we have raised over £700,000 for Action Against Hunger, and now we are pushing ourselves to make sure we break the £750,000 barrier with our Cycle Challenge.

It's not going to be easy, so we have asked for help from the experts and have had massive support from Bianchi, GB Cycles and Bike Food. Without their help we could not make this challenge happen.

The team: Simon Kossoff, Ben Bushell, Clive Watkins, Jason Myers Marcus Weedon, Neil Pangbourne, Richard Leeney

A bit more about Carluccio's and Action Against Hunger:

There seemed to be a link between a group of people making their living from selling food to affluent people in the first world and helping to raise money to support those suffering from hunger in the third.

This simple understanding meant that since 2008 every plate of our most popular dish, Penne Giardiniera, has raised 50p for Action Against Hunger. It is this link that meant a team from Carluccio's including our CEO visited Monrovia the capital of Liberia in West Africa to see firsthand the Action Against Hunger Projects where the money raised from Penne Giardinera sales was being spent. They reported back saying:

“Years of political strife made Monrovia a city who's population doubled in just a few years to 900,000 (the size of Birmingham). With no electricity, no running water and wholly inadequate sanitation, life expectancy was only 45 years.

Despite this awful and frightening backdrop our money is delivering results. We saw the children's feeding centre which cares for 120 mothers and their severely malnourished babies. There we met emaciated babies who would die without access to the clinic and a wonderful 18 month old boy called Maddison, cured with our help a few months ago and now a bouncy and very cheeky young man.

We visited the slum town of Westpoint to meet people living in the worst imaginable conditions there joining Ernesto, a social worker who we support, and his group of teenage mothers who simply have no idea how to care for their children. Children who without Ernesto's and our support could simply fade away”.

Glasgow Lockerbie, 80 miles in the rain...not very nice but done!

07/07/12 16:42

Somewhat galling that it took an hour to fly to Glasgow and we have 7 days now ahead of us to get back. Just want to get going now.

06/07/12 17:23

The support team, already in Scotland, report torrential rain. But our minibus looks brilliant in its new livery!
