'I'm sick of hearing about this Robin Hood, I think we should race it and see what all the fuss is about.' And I'd only had 1 drink!
So began my career as a runner. Ian trained with me, convinced I'd never carry it through, and practically walked beside me as I shuffled to complete my 1st 1/2 marathon. The following year he ran the last 10k of my 1st marathon, to keep my spirits up, whilst making me promise not to put myself through this again!
When he died, suddenly, on 25th Jan 2007, running kept my spirits up. I threw myself into training, raced like a demon, keeping busy to stop my grief engulfing me. Finding the WAY Foundation kept me going also. I met other widows and widowers, some with stories worse than mine, but all going through the same experience. I've made lots of friends, been on holiday with some and now help co-ordinate the Nottinghamshire branch.
I'm therefore very proud to be running the London Marathon next year, in memory of my much-loved husband, and for WAY. The forum, chatroom, information pages, conference and organised events all over the country keep people in contact with those who understand. It is vital that we have an up-to-date computer system for the bereaved to find support and comfort.
I hope therefore you will sponsor me, and I'll try hard to wave at the cameras on the day - but I draw the line at wearing a swan suit!
