Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

This September Cat Meachin and Ruth Tredget are going to attempt to cycle about 1000miles from Lands End to John O Groats in 2-3 weeks, camping on the way!  We're doing this to raise money for Help for Heroes, the charity set up to look out for the needs of our troops serving out in Afghanistan, Iraq and many other places.  To find out more about them please look at their website http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/index.html.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - we raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So please donate now and do your bit to help support our wounded troops.

Diary of Ride starting 1st September:

Day 1: Caught train to Penzance, then cycled to Lands End, back to Penzance and on to Redruth - camped the first night.  Approx 45 miles
Day 2: Redruth - Boscastle - 6 hours of non-stop rain! Stayed in Boscastle Youth Hostel - very pretty village. Approx 45 miles
Day 3 (am): Boscastle - Bideford - approx 30 miles.  Had half-hour hill climb out of Boscastle this am, and first puncture of the ride :(  but now enjoying fish & chips @ Bideford for lunch!

(pm): Made it to lovely campsite in Lynton - hopefully the tent will dryout soon! - 75 miles done today - lots of hills & aching muscles!

Day 4: Lynton - Yatton - approx 70 miles. Some more hills including going down Porlock hill today. The coast road is very pretty but also very hilly! Hopefully that is the end of the hilly section now. Stayed with Cat's Aunt.

Day 5: Yatton - Hereford - Pete met up with us and cycled with us for part of the day

Day 6: Hereford - Shrewsbury. Camped.

Day 7: Shrewsbury - Liverpool. Noticed brake blocks wearing thin, so visited bikeshop in Shrewsbury (we weren't the first end-to-enders to visit the shop!). Later in day Ruth noticed cycling was hardwork - found brake blocks rubbing against wheel - like cycling with the brakes on :-(. Managed to adjust wheel and made it to Liverpool - staying with Lou.

Day 8:More bike problems today, Ruth lost a screw from the panier rack, but met some really nice people who helped us to fix it. More rain today so staying in B&B tonight.

Day 9: Long day today, eventually got to Penrith at 8pm after about 85 miles - very TIRED but spurring each other on!!!  Ruth's back wheel playing up now - think it is beginning to buckle a bit so will look into replacing it in the morning at bikeshop in Penrith. Cats bike is fine! Hope to be in Scotland tomorrow evening!!!

Day 10: 1 mile before Moffat (our destination for the day) Ruth's panier rack broke. Managed to get to Moffat in relays! No bikeshop in Moffat - so going to have to resort to the local blacksmith in the morning to see if he can help! Did about 60 miles today.

Day 11: Very nice blacksmith welded Ruth's panier rack back together & campsite let us leave some of our unwanted things we'd packed so set off with lighter load and a new meth cooker made from the bottoms of 2 tin cans! After a late start managed to do just over 80 miles with a very long hill at the end to get in just before dark and camp near Stirling.

Day 12: Nice fast road today, did just under 85 miles up to Glencoe to meet Ruth's mum and dad who took our paniers for the last 10  miles :) Stunning scenery with the lochs & hills.

Day 13: More relaxed day, just over 70miles up to Loch Ness!

Day 14: Nice riding & amazing views across Dornoch Firth.  Went the wrong way past Culrain YH so had to go back about 3miles and then down several flights of steps over a railway bridge which was interesting with all the paniers! Stopped off by the falls of Shin and saw some leaping Salmon which were incredible! Camped in Lairg.

Day 15: Had lunch by a sign to the most remote hotel in Britain! Nice short day of just under 60 miles so got in quite early to Melvich, very beautiful along North coast now.

Day 16: Raced Ruth's mum and dad to John O'Groats...they beat us though, overtaking us about 10 miles out.  Arrived in John O'Groats about 1.30!!
