BUPA Great North Run 2009 · 20 September 2009 ·

Wakefield Hospice provides high quality palliative and end-of-life care to people with serious illnesses. We aim to meet the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of patients and their families. Thanks to everyone who raises funds to ensure we’re here to support families in Wakefield.

Story

We did it again...amazingly in 2hrs 18mins...our best time ever!

It was 2005 when Catherine first suggested doing the Great North Run (GNR) together with her dad. Whilst Jim had run on and off most of his life, he had never done anything so challenging as a half marathon (13.1 miles) and Catherine had never even run for a bus!

This year was the 3rd time we have trained and run the event together. It was Jim's 4th run, having only missed the 2008 event because the entry forms went astray. In case you are wondering, Catherine had to drop out last time because of a late injury.

As in previous years we ran to raise funds for Wakefield Hospice. The hospice caters for nearly 300 in-patients and 1,800 day therapy patients every year.  No charge is made for care, so the hospice relies heavily on fundraising initiatives and the generosity of the community to help meet its yearly running costs of about £3m.

80p of every £1 donated is spent on patient care!
