We work through volunteers to bring about lasting change

Story

Thank you very much for visiting my fundraising page!

I have obviously reached my target and would like top say a massive thank you to everyone that has supported me, friends, family, strangers and my local Rotary clubs. However please don't let that stop you donating if you wish. All the money raised goes directly to VSO to help run the Global Xchange project.

As of March 2009 I will be taking part in Global Xchange, a six month exchange programme which gives young people from different countries a unique opportunity to work together, to develop and share valuable skills and to make a practical contribution where it is needed in local communities.

My exchange is Stanstead - Kazakhsan. During the programme I will live and volunteer in Stanstead, UK and Shymkent, Kazakhstan alongside a team of 18 other volunteers from the UK and Kazakhstan. We will be working for a range of local charities dealing with difficult issues such as disability, HIV and AIDS and orphans as well as working on larger team projects to promote social inclusion and active citizenship in a multitude of ways.

A little more about how Global Xchange works -

Global Xchange is a volunteering programme for young people aged 18-25   coordinated by Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) and the British Council
Six-month exchanges take place between the UK and various countries across Asia and Africa, with three months spent volunteering in both countries.
The team of volunteers is made up of equal numbers of young people from both the UK and the exchange country, who live and work together in counterpart pairs, staying with local host families.
It aims to inspire active global citizens to work together to create positive change and build mutual understanding and respect, both locally and internationally.
Volunteers make a positive contribution in both the UK and a developing country by working with local community organisations, as well as coordinating larger scale community events as a whole team.

N.B. This is NOT a holiday. Yes I will be going abroad, but I will be volunteering for local charities dealing with disability, HIV & AIDS and orphanages in both the UK and in Kazakhstan. I expect this to be one of the most challenging things I will ever do, but I hope that any small difference I can make will make it worth it.

It costs VSO around £7000 to send a volunteer on the programme, however volunteers are only asked to fundraise a contribution of £600 towards the organisation's work. This is how you can help:

* Donate online here! Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It's also the most efficient way to sponsor me: VSO gets your money faster and, if you're a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

* Spread the word about Global Xchange to friends and family so that as wide a range of people can get involved in the programme as possible. If you know anyone who might like to be a future volunteer or a future host family, please tell them to feel free to get in touch.

If you would like any further information please check out the Global Xchange website (
http://www.vso.org.uk/globalxchange/) or feel free to e-mail me (catherinefisher_101@hotmail.co.uk).

Thank you so much for your support!

Love Catherine x
UPDATE
I have now started the Global Xchange programme. I am living with my counterpart Gulnara in a host home in Harlow and volunteering with a youth support organisation called Catch 22 (http://www.catch-22.org.uk/)

About the charity

VSO is an international development organisation that brings people together to share skills, build capabilities, and change lives to make the world a fairer place for all. Everyday, VSO volunteers are working to empower people living in some of the world’s most marginalised communities.
