Ronald McDonald House UK helps families with children in hospital stay close by providing free accommodation just minutes from children’s hospital wards. Our Houses provide more than accommodation. We offer stability and emotional support that allow parents and carers to be active partners in care.

Story

The Ronald Macdonald House - Brighton

We have set  up this page to make people aware of this charity and what it does to help people like me and my husband. Until we needed to use this charity we did even know that it existed, so I would like to forward this on to people so that they can learn of the charity and how it helps people with sick children.

Back in November 2008 we had our twins, prematurely at 24 weeks and 4 days.  Sadly Kieran died at 25 hours old. Chloe, his twin sister, contunied her battle in the Trevor Mann Baby Unit where all the help she needed was given.

Having been at the hospital for two weeks I needed to be discharged from the ward I was on as I was then healthy enough to be allowed to leave. However, our baby girl was still up on the 14th floor in the baby unit fighting for her life, and we did not want to leave or be any further away from her than 5 minutes away.  This is where we were informed of the Ronald MacDonald House.

The Ronald MacDonald House is right near the entrance of the hospital and only five minutes away from the baby unit.  We were met by two lovely Managers Angela and Martin, who welcomed us into the house, and showed us what we needed to know.  The house is run as a charity and no charge is given to families with sick children who need somewhere to stay whilst their child is in hospital.  This for us came as such a huge relief, as we could not afford to pay for accomodation next to the hospital as well as paying all our normal bills at home.  It also saved us from having to travel daily from Eastbourne to Brighton but more importantly it meant that we could spend as much time, day or night, with out baby girl.  We couldnt' bear the thought of being any more than five minutes away from her.

The house has all things that you would need, washing facilities for laundry, on suite bathrooms, beds, kitchen utencils, living room with tv and dvd for families to have some of their own time.  The house has several different rooms that can accomodate people who already have children to be able to stay.

If it wasn't for the Ronald MacDonald House we would not have had a place to stay so that we could be near our daughter at all times, and for that we will always be grateful.

Three weeks after going into the Ronald MacDonald House our daughter Chloe sadly died, and joined her brother at peace. She fought for five weeks but sadly died on Boxing Day 2008.

Even through we never got to bring our children home, we can never forget the kindness and help that we received from people during the most difficult time of our life. Thank you to all of those people, and thank you to those of you who donate through this site, to help the houses continue with their good hard work.
