English Channel Swim 24th September 2009

The Challenge: Dover to Calais, 22 miles of cold, murky water

“The Channel Otters”, usually known as Tony Naughton,  Murray Fraser, Peter Beatty and Jon Spriggs are undertaking the challenge of The English Channel as a relay team. All swimming enthusiasts, the team was formed through association with the Otter Swim School and The Potteries; seeing Tony forces with Murray and Pete (Dads of children who swim with us), and Jon, another friend from the aquatic world. .

Ten years ago to the date of the event, Tony and Rebecca’s son, Lewis, was born, requiring specialised help at the neo natal unit at Addenbrookes hospital. As repayment for their kindness, Rebecca promised to run the London Marathon for their charity, which she successfully did in 1996, raising £2,800 for the unit. Tony then promised to swim the channel….

Training has started in Dover harbour, with the Channel Otters very excited about the task ahead of them. Enduring murky, salty water at 10.5 °C has proven to be a test to even the hardiest of swimmers! The team have full appreciation of just how tough this challenge will be, and are prepared for the battle of the body and mind!

The Channel Otters are determined to complete the challenge, motivated by the goal of raising as much money as possible for this worthy cause. Addenbrooke's Hospital and "The Rosie" have helped the lives of so many families, and we feel that we would like to show our appriciation towards their kindness.
