RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews provide a 24-hour search and rescue service all around the UK and Ireland, while lifeguards keep a careful watch on the UK’s busiest beaches. RNLI lifesaving and drowning prevention depend on supporter fundraising and the generous donations that you and others give.

Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

In this year, 2009, I reach my half-century. To commemorate passing this notable milestone, I want to achieve something that I will always look back on with pride. What better than a Marathon, 26 miles I had previously swore I'd never attempt. And what better than the London Marathon, arguably the greatest of all the city marathons.

My love of sailing and long-time membership of the RNLI makes my choice of charity easy. I hope you too will find it easy to support this most worthy organisation and its crews to whom so many seafarers owe their lives.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: the RNLI gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please sponsor me now!

update 27 April

Finished. 4 hours 10 minutes and 38 seconds.

It was an amazing day. The London Marathon organisation is superb. The support I received from the RNLI was fantastic. The people who turned out in their thousands to cheer the runners are awesome. Wow.

I was in considerable pain towards the end as first one then the other knee declared that they had had enough. I am so pleased to have got round the course and run a marathon. It was harder than I had imagined but a truly rewarding experience.

Thank you, everyone, for the generous donations.

Charles

PS Enjoy this great RNLI video I found on YouTube.
