We will be travelling to Damaraland in Nambia for a 10 day cycle across the vast red rock desert landscape. The area is home to black rhino, elephant, lion, and a wealth of other game species uniquely adapted to survive the world's most ancient desert, the Namib. 
But these rhinos are on the brink of extinction because of loss of habitat and poaching for their horns (for two reasons only - to make handles for ornamental daggers and as a Far Eastern remedy to reduce fever). Three out of the five species of Rhino are critically endangered.  By saving these rhinos, we also help save many other species and the incredible landscape they inhabit. From this bike ride Save the Rhino Trust (SRT) will also be building an Education and Information Centre in support of the tribal communities.
I know this may seem like a cause so far from our own lives, but our cousin Vanessa Buxton has drawn our attention to the plight of the rhino and work of the SRT and organised this fundraising trip in memory of her friend Mike Hearn who worked for 12 years amongst the tribal communities of Northern Namibia.
Please do support us and give generously for a cause that really does need our help.  We are greatly looking forward to the challenge of this exhilarating trip and are spending our evenings "spinning" in the gym and weekends cycling around Richmond Park in the pouring rain! This is a far cry from the warm, rugged conditions we will be enduring in Namibia as there are no roads.  We already have sore bums now.....
