The charity enhances patient care, treatment and experience through a wide variety of grants; supports innovative research and facilitates additional training and support for NHS staff. My story

Please allow me to introduce the Charlie Bear for Cancer Care charitable fund – a dedicated, local fund which helps us to provide comfort and care for our patients and their families from all over the northern region at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.

Charlie Bear for Cancer Care was originally set up in 1978 by the late Daisy Clark MBE from Morpeth to raise £1 million helping us purchase the cancer centre’s very first CT scanner so that our staff can make quick and accurate cancer diagnosis. Daisy and her team made and sold thousands of teddy bears, called Charlie after her husband, and together with the amazing generosity of the people of the North East this target was reached in 1982.

Charlie Bear celebrated his 30th birthday in 2008 and with your generous donations, he continues to help us go that bit further by providing additional patient comforts, new sophisticated equipment, specialist staff training and funding for local cancer research projects – all essential to help us help patients living with cancer.

Every penny helps and so your donations are most gratefully received.
