Story

Little Charlie Woods has battled a deadly infection, five brain haemorrhages, Group B strep meningitis and water on the brain.

That's quite a lot for someone who's only 10 months old.

In fact, doctors said there was no hope for him so many times his mum Kayleigh lost count. And she was warned that if he did pull through, he would be severely brain damaged.

But not only has he survived each brush with death, he has suffered no mental or physical side-effects. He chatters away and plays like any other baby.

He is Kayleigh's little miracle. She said: "The doctors are just staggered... they had never had a young baby suffer so many brain bleeds in such a short period of time - and survive."

At just 10 days old, Charlie was diagnosed with Group B Streptococcus (GBS) - a deadly infection of the bloodstream which affects around 700 newborns every year and kills 75. The bug went to his brain and caused meningitis. A week after being rushed to hospital, Charlie had five brain haemorrhages in a row.

Kayleigh is now backing a campaign for the NHS to test all pregnant women for GBS - it costs £32. Mums who test positive are given antibiotics to drastically reduce the risk of their baby being infected.

Kayleigh said: "There should be something  to prevent hundreds of mums going through the misery I did."
