As many of you know raising funds for The Royal Marsden Hospital is a major goal of mine.

To secure my place at IM UK 09 I have guaranteed personally to raise a £1000 for Scope, this years registered Charity at IM. Any sponsorship over £1000 will go direct to the Royal Marsden. So this years fundraising target would present The RMH with a much bigger cheque for 2009. (please refer to my 2008 fundraising page www.justgiving.com/charlietipper for more info).

My primary reason for competing in any of these events was to support The Neil Barnard Memorial Fund. Close family friends, Terry and Brenda Barnard, lost their son Neil to leukaemia in 1994 aged 21. He was a great guy who fought for four years against his illness with much dignity. Neil was treated at the Royal Marsden Hospital, the worlds’ oldest hospital, dedicated to cancer treatment, research and education.

Terry has maintained a close tie with the hospital, creating a relationship with Amanda Heaton (the Fundraising and Community Development manager at the RMH). This has enabled the proceeds he has raised in the last 15 years through various fundraising activities to directly benefit the patients, which the NHS does not automatically supply. These Funds have provided medical provisions such as a blood cell counting machine and automatic blood pressure monitors. Also electric beds, exercise bikes, televisions and dvd players help to make the patients recovery more comfortable.

Our sponsorship will go directly to the ward Neil was a patient on. With the help of Terry and Amanda, my sponsors will know exactly what they have helped to provide with their generosity. I receive a cheque personally from scope which I will immediately give direct to the Royal Marsden - it could not be more direct - NOT 1 PENNY WASTED.

All the Very Best,
