My story

Hello and welcome to my fundraising page.

I am raising funds for the ME Association by raising sponsorship to run in the London Marathon this year.  I am supporting the ME Association because a friend of mine, Melvyn Gamblin, suffered from this condition.  It struck him while he was in his early twenties and at the time it was not a well understood illness.  He eventually learnt to live with it, but tragically five years ago he disappeared while he was visiting the Olympic Games in Athens.  He has not been seen since.

Since then I have felt that I should do something, but never came up with a good idea of what to do.  Last year I decided that there was nothing I could practically do to help find Melv, but I could help other suffers of ME in some way.  Melv had been a middle distance runner, and the most appropriate thing I could think of was to have a go at the London Marathon.  It would make him laugh to see me try and run all that way.  I’ve always been more of a sprinter than a distance runner.  Two years ago I did the London Marathon, or a better description would be that I finished the marathon!  This year I hope to do a lot better and I will try not to be beaten by the fancy dress rhino!

My fund raising will not stop with the London Marathon, I intend to organise an event afterwards, when the weather is better which will help me achieve my target of £1,000.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me. The ME Association gets your money faster and, if you’re a taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.  It also makes my life a lot easier.

So please help me attain my target by sponsoring me.

You can catch up with me on my blog, www.realbuzz.com/blogs/u/Ray_Chin/old-man-on-the-run .  I’ve moved into the 21st century!

And thank you for visiting my page.

Update!

A big thank you to everyone who has donated to the ME Association.  This money is all going to a very good cause.  Today I picked up my number which is 19829.  It is possible to see at what time I start, when I cross the half way mark and when I finish.  You can visit the following webpage and keep a check on me.

It is rather long, but if you go there you can put in any runner's number and you'll find out some information on where I am.

Post Marathon Update

I did it!  Even with a few challenges thrown my way, I did finally complete the course in 4hours and 58 mins.  A agian thank you to all that have supported me and given sponsor money for the ME Association.  More money is coming in and I've got to try and organise something for the summer.  It'll keep me out of trouble for a while.

Thank you all again.

Ray

And Finally

I have been very slow in getting around to doing this, so I apologise for the delay.  With the help of all of you, we have been able to raise over £1300, which is brilliant.  My idea of a summer event has stalled, but I haven’t given up in trying to do something to boost the coffers.

I have done very little since the marathon and I am rapidly putting on weight, so I need to do something about it.  I keep thinking about starting doing some training again and then I think I’ll do it tomorrow.  So I've put it off for a couple of months now but I've organise a trip to the mountains in a few weeks, so I have to do something soon.

Back to the important bit, thank you all for your support.  The funds raised will help people who suffer ME and the research in to the illness.  I also hope that by doing this marathon people will have more aware of the illness.

Thank You

Ray
