WPSI, founded by Belinda Wright, supports wildlife conservation issues throughout India, campaigning for and protecting endangered species, notably the tiger, by investigating poaching networks and the escalating illegal wildlife trade. It encourages law enforcement and prosecution by government authorities, and gives material support, training and information to India's remaining tiger reserves.

Story

Dear Friends,

I would like to ask for your kind donation towards 2 causes that are very important to me, as they have deeply effected my friends in India.

The Sundarbans, a vast archipelago of islands in west Bengal were hit by a massive cyclone in June. This beautiful area has a unique eco system dominated by mangrove forests and saline and fresh water. People here balance their survival with subsistence farming and fishing. The Bengal tigers which share this precious environment are given protection by the special reserves. These magnificent creatures are being poached at the rate of 1 per day (in the last century their numbers have shrunk from 40,000 to about 1,400 in the whole of India) and The Sundarbans have a high proportion of the surviving population.

The cyclone has ruined crops, broken the vital flood barriers, contaminated fresh water and made thousands homeless. Added to this bleak situation, outbreaks of cholera and malaria have been reported. This has an obvious knock-on effect for the beleaguered tiger.

My family and I hope to raise funds for medicines, mosquito nets and building materials to repair the damaged infra structure of the islands. We would also like to help the plight of the tiger.  As well as this page, my family are organising an Indian Summer Party on Sept 19th. The proceeds of which will be sent to WPSI (Wildlife Protection Society of India www.wpsi-india.org ) founded by Belinda Wright OBE. They will also ensure that money will be channelled into various projects to help the people effected.

This is my only charity project of the year and I would really, really appreciate your support. My friend Bikram, who lives in Delhi, has been helping with the post-cyclone clear up and has been shocked and saddened by the devasting situation. I am trying to help this end, and would love you to help me.

If you are interested in coming to the party (Bengali feasts, cabaret and auction) then email me for details, otherwise please give what you can.

Thank you!

 Chloe
