Anyone can get Parkinson’s. It gets worse over time and there’s no cure. Yet. Funding research into the most promising treatments, we’re getting closer to a cure. Until then, we're improving life for people with Parkinson’s, and the people in their lives. Together we'll find a cure.

Story

Hi, thank you for visiting my site.

UPDATE 19 Aug 08.  It has been a month now since I got back from the Gobi.  i thought I'd get a bit of rest...but life has been just as busy as before I left!  Hence, delay in updating this site.  The race was great.  What a great event, in a great place and most importantly with some great people.  I really enjoyed the whole thing and I am really greatful to all those that have pledged support...I have not done too much excersie since I got back...although I did go ballroom dancing (in my slippers!)....But overall it was an unforgettable amazing experience...I can't thank you enough for all of your support.  Together we have raised a substantial some (around £4000) for a great charity...THANKS.  Chris.

UPDATE 07 June 08.  Not long now...just four weeks.  The picture has been updated.  The latest picture was taken after a training off-road marathon today.  This is the T-shirt I hope to wear as I cross the finish line...(excuse the creases...I had to drag it out of the wash basket!).  I am starting to finalise kit now...did you know that a titanium spork (spoon and fork in one) weighs 12 grams...!  Anyway cheers for now

Hi, thanks for visiting my site.

The picture is me training in the Dubai sand dunes in Sept 2007.  I have ploughed some significant effort into getting myself fit enough to attempt a challenge like this and I wanted to capture some of this effort and help a cause close to my heart.  I would be really grateful if you could donate some money to the Parkinson’s Disease Society.  For those that wish to know a bit more, the below few paragraphs go into more detail…Thanks, Chris.

This is not an offset event.  I have paid for all costs myself. So every single penny donated will reach the PDS charity and will go to a good cause.

THE REASON…In 2006 my step-grandfather died after a long and gallant fight against the life draining disease – Parkinson’s.  This affected the entire family and this is an opportunity not only to help contribute to research into further understanding and working towards a cure but also to contribute to the provision of so many vital support workers that help families come to terms with the disease and it’s consequences.  Parkinson’s Disease Society is a charity organisation that organises and funds research and care workers and desperately needs donations to continue fighting this debilitating disease.

THE CHALLENGE… Gobi Challenge is an extreme 140 mile race through the Gobi Desert, run over six days. The route covers sand dunes, mountain ranges including an ice gorge and miles of desert plains.  This is a self sufficiency event where I will be carrying all my supplies for the entire week (but luckily this does not apply to water!).  This is not going to be easy…

THE MONEY BIT…from the PDS website (http://www.parkinsons.org.uk/), this is what things cost…this may help you decide how much to donate….
• £2 covers the cost of sending out a free copy of our DVD Being There to someone newly diagnosed with Parkinson's
• £12 could enable a Community Support Worker to give expert advice on benefits to a person with Parkinson’s
• £25 could pay for a PDS Helpline nurse to take calls for an hour
• £150 could fund a Parkinson’s Disease Nurse Specialist for a day
• £1,000 could fund a cutting edge research project into Parkinson’s for a week

On question people often ask about such events is “How much have you donated?”, although it doesn’t show here I have pledged £150.

Thanks for your contribution….Chris.
