Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In October, I will be trekking through Borneo in order to help raise much needed funds for The Blue Cross! In order to go I need to raise £3200, although I would love to raise much more that this =)

I have decided to take on this huge challenge to help raise money for animals that have been abandoned or are unwanted, and those animals who are in need of vital veterinary treatment who without the help of The Blue Cross would not be able to get it. Just £5 will pay for a microchip that will allow an animal to be permanently identified and £25 will pay for a kittens vaccinations and worming treatments.

I will be spending 5 days trekking through the jungle, encountering huge spiders, crocs, monkeys and millions of leeches!! Eek! O.O I will be camping out in the jungle for a couple of nights and a couple of nights sleeping in the villages. I'm terrified of spiders, but it will be worth it to raise money for animals =) I will then be spending 3 days volunteering with an Orangutan conservation project. I will be helping to research the Orangutans behaviour and what trees and plants are needed for reforestation. I will also be planting some trees.

Orangutans are endangered creatures. Their main threats are habitat loss, poaching and illegal wildlife trade. Most of the habitat loss in Borneo is due to conversion to oil palm plantations. Many baby orangutans are orphaned on a daily basis because of the oil palm plantations. Orangutans are not the only animals to be affected. Pygmy Elephants, Sumatrans Rhinos, Clouded Leopards, Sun Bears and many other species are endangered or vulnerable because of the same reasons.

The Blue Cross was founded in 1897. Today, they have 11 adoption centres, 3 equine centres and 4 veterinary hospitals. Their mission is to provide a service meeting all the welfare needs of companion animals through treatment, advice and support, and finding them caring homes. Their adoption centres find new homes to more than 6,000 unwanted and abandoned animals every year. They have 3 veterinary hospitals in London and 1 in Grimsby. These hospitals provide 80,000 free veterinary treatments each year for pets whose disadvantaged owners cannot afford private veterinary fees. In London, The Blue Cross also provides community veterinary nurses and a mobile veterinary clinic.
