As most of you who know us will be aware, our daughter Ellie was born on 23rd October last year. She had serious complications at birth, and bowel surgery within her first 24 hours. The surgeons diagnosed a Meconium ileus, and told us that this was a sure sign of a condition called Cystic Fibrosis.

We knew relatively little about this life-shortening disease, but what we were told prepared us for the fact that Ellie was going to need life-long treatment, medication and physiotherapy. As well as the opportunity for the happy, family times we expected with our new daughter, over a number of years her health would severely decline, and ultimately she was unlikely to live into her 40s.

We were devastated at the thought of what Ellie would experience, the ways in which the illness would limit her life, and the impact this would have on Noah and the rest of our family.

Fantastically, 2 weeks later, against the expectations of virtually all the medical staff, Ellie’s test results came back negative. She required further surgery and several months in hospital to recover from the Meconium ileus, but with the fantastic care and support of all the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Staff, as well as our amazing family and friends, Ellie is now a completely healthy and happy 6 month old, full of giggles and energy.

It’s hard to even think back to the days of Ellie’s diagnosis. We obviously feel incredibly lucky; the importance of the health and life of our children is unquantifiable. We are so thankful to have avoided having our lives changed by CF.
