This is all about dementia.

It had never touched my life until a couple of years ago - actually, it had. We just hadn't realised or understood why Dad's personality was changing. At first, gradually. Then, progressively. No doubt soon, it may be rapidly.

So, what can be done for him and people in his situation? Well, there's no cure, palliative treatments cause as many issues as the disease and research is grossly under-funded. Hopefully, this will change, but until it does, my Dad, your Dad, or whoever it is (maybe you and me before long!) need to be cared for - and that's a skill.

What can we give people with dementia? Dignity, as their disease progresses; support, for everything they can no longer do themselves; and care.

That's why I'm looking to raise a modest amount of money for a special hospice, Weston House, part of the MHA Charity Group. They're a modest bunch of highly skilled people who have great respect for the residents and take great care to provide that dignity I mentioned. And I'm fussy!

Four of us are doing this as a team (the others are youngsters), but for different good causes. Riding 400 miles on a bike in 4 days in my physical condition is a big challenge, but doesn't come anywhere near the daily challenges faced by Weston House carers. But if I can make a small difference to how they can provide care, comfort and dignity, it will be worth it.
