In early 2006 my mum, Ann, suffered a devastating stroke. We thought we were about to lose her, but after a few months she appeared to have recovered and even travelled overseas. We all went on a holiday to North East England in 2007. The picture on the left was taken in the summer of 2007, that's me in the funny hat.
Just as she seemed to be making a good recovery, there were signs that not all was well. She was becoming more and more confused and anxious about everyday things. Then in May 2008, a scan revealed a large cerebral aneurysm that required immediate surgery. Again we thought we might lose her.
After a six-hour operation things looked bleak, and sadly our fears of permanent damage appear to have been confirmed. Although we continue to hope and pray she might make a miraculous recovery, it appears that she will now remain in a nursing home.
I want to run the Midnight Sun Marathon to raise money for the Stroke Association who do so much important work in raising awareness of stroke and providing care and assistance for stroke victims and their families.
For the eighteen months that my mum was recovering from her initial stroke, she went weekly to a dysphasia group, which as well as helping my mum, importantly gave my dad a break from the stressful task of 24-hour care.
