Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I'm running for this great charity because my girlfriend suffers from Coeliac disease so I'd like to help raise awareness and support.
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune systems attacks its own tissue. Gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye triggers an immune reaction in people with coeliac disease. This means that eating gluten damages the lining of the small intestine. Other parts of the body may be affected.
There is no cure or medication for the condition and the only treatment is life-long adherence to a strict gluten-free diet. Without a gluten-free diet, the disease can lead to other conditions, such as malnutrition, osteoporosis, infertility, multiple miscarriages and can cause bowel cancer.
It's common and affects 1 in 100 people, however only 10-15% are diagnosed. Some symptoms may be mistaken as Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or wheat intolerance. Stress or getting older can also be a cause of confusion.
Coeliac UK is the only charity in the UK, which supports those with coeliac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis. It receives no government funding and is dependent on the generosity of the public to fund practical support, awareness raising and research into the condition.
