Hi Everyone!!

I will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro the worlds highest freestanding mountain, (located in Tanzania, East Africa near the Kenyan border), this October(8th) 2010 to raise donations for the Alzheimer’s Society.

I will be travelling out to Tanzania alone, where I will meet and join a group of porters, guides and other climbers to begin the trek. Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest peak, standing 5,895 metres above sea level. The summit climb(involving 1,295m of ascent & 2,145m of descent) will be the most challenging part of the expedition, given the lack of sleep, biting winds, temperatures changing from -20 to 35 degrees and the high altitude.

I will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise donations for the Alzheimer’s Society. 1 in 3 people over the age of 65 will die from dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease itself, being the most common cause of dementia. It is a progressive disease meaning that gradually over time, different regions of the brain will deteriorate, with symptoms becoming more pronounced and severe. Little is known about the exact causes of the disease, and currently there is no cure for the illness.

The Alzheimer’s Society is the leading UK care and research charity. The Charity invests in research to try and enhance the quality of life of people with Alzheimer’s, and are currently trying to identify the causes of the illness to assist in trying to discover a cure. I will also be taking on this challenge in memory of my Grandad who suffered from the condition.

Preparation for the climb has been challenging, & has involved months of training, including: trekking up Snowdon (North Wales) intense gym workouts, & added to this, weekly gruelling personal training sessions & giving up haribos!

Please can I ask for your help to reach my target goal of £1,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society. I will be paying for the full cost of the trek myself and therefore all sponsorship funds raised will go directly to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my page & for your support,

Christine:)
