I'm taking part in Trek Egypt 2009 to raise money for Action Cancer
About Action Cancer: One in three of us will get cancer. Action Cancer relies heavily on donations from the public to provide a range of vital, life-saving services. Action Cancer is a Northern Ireland charity and all money raised stays within Northern Ireland.
About me: In 2002 I did the Anti-Atlas Mountain Trek in Morocco and in 2003 I did the Inca Trail across the Andes in Peru. I did both these treks for Action Cancer.
These treks are NOT a holiday! We trekked all day and slept in freezing, wet tents at night. In Morocco we woke up in a blizzard and actually had frost on our clothes! In Peru I took Acute Altitude Sickness which is very dangerous and immediate descent is necessary for survival so (having at least reached the summit) I came down the mountain both on foot and on very shakey donkey-back whilst throwing up and almost passing out. Apart from that the treks were very rewarding and worthwhile!!!!
About Trek Egypt: Between 9-17th May, 2009 I will be taking part in trek Egypt.
We are trekking in the Sinai region. It is a harsh environment and is a million miles away from everyday life and our much taken-for-granted home comforts.
The trek follows part of the route taken by Moses 3,000 years ago.
On our first trekking day we will be rising at 2am and climbing Mt Sinai reaching the summit (2,265 metres) for sunrise. We will be descending the same day. During the course of the rest of the week we will be trekking both on mountainous and desert terrain and along riverbeds, finishing (hopefully in one piece!) at the Red Sea.
Personal note: Many of you may know that in 2006 I lost my dear mum to cancer, so raising money for cancer charities now is especially close to my heart xxx
