Motor Neurone Disease moves fast. It takes away time, it takes away independence and it has no cure. Every day we support people affected by MND. We fund ground-breaking research. We campaign for better care. We’re here for everyone who needs us. Because with MND, every day matters.

Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. My name is Chris Allen and i shall be taking part in the London - Amsterdam Cycle Ride between 21 - 25 June 2007 in support of the Motor Neurone Disease  Association.

What Is MND

Motor Neurone Disease ( MND ) is a devastating and fatal disease of the nervous  system. It attacks the nerve cells ( motor neurones ) that send messages from the brain to the muscles. As these motor neurones gradually die, the muscles stop working. Every day, more damage is done and the body slowly deteriorates. MND can destroy the ability to walk, talk, dress or swallow. People with MND live their lives totally dependent on others for their most basic needs. The mind and senses, though, are rarely affected. People with MND know exactly what is happening to their bodies. Though the rate of progression varies, life expectancy after the first onset of symptoms is just 2 - 5 years. MND is a progressive, fatal illness that can affect any adult at any age. In the UK alone, some 5,000 people are living with the disease at any one time for which there is no cure.

My Experience of MND

My wife Brenda was diagnosed with MND in April 2005, although symptoms had started 15 mths earlier with slurred speech and later difficulty swallowing. Now her speech is very difficult to understand and she gets her nutrition through a feeding tube into her stomach. She can only walk a few steps with help and uses a wheelchair when out. After suffering with pneumonia in the new year she now requires the use of  non-invasive ventilation overnight and uses a cough assist machine twice a day.Every day life is becoming harder and harder as our world has been turned upside down.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Motor Neurone Disease Association will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!

Many thanks for your support

Chris.

P.S. Sadly, Brenda passed away at the end of July
