Royal Parks Half Marathon 2009 · 11 October 2009 ·

Group B Strep is the leading cause of severe infection in newborn babies including sepsis, meningitis and pneumonia. Charity Group B Strep Support provides support for families, improves awareness, educates health professionals and campaigns for better prevention. Thanks for fundraising for GBSS.

Story

Yes, really….

Next Sunday 11th October I will be (very slowly) taking part in the second Royal Parks Half Marathon in London. You may not be so surprised to learn that I don’t expect to set any records but I'm hopeful that I'll be able to finish in around 2.5hrs…I am definitely more tortoise than hare….

I will be raising money for Group B Strep Support, a charity that aims to prevent GBS infection in newborn babies. I first learnt about GBS a few years ago when a close friend lost her beautiful baby Rosie to the GBS infection at 4 days of age. The GBSS charity was a souce of huge support and information for my friends Lindsay and George after their tragic loss and the education and information provided was a real help to them, particularly during Lindsay's next pregnancy which resulted in the arrival of a healthy and happy baby girl, Victoria.

GBS infects around 700 babies each year of whom for 75 or so its fatal and around 40 survivors suffer long term problems. The tragedy is that the GBS infection can usually be prevented by a simple non-invasive and non-expensive test late in pregnancy to detect the presence of the bacteria and by giving antibiotics to the mum during labour. The Group B Strep Support organisation works to raise awareness amongst pregnant women of the potential impact of GBS.

So your support would be appreciated.
