Please sponsor me on a gruelling 50 miles hike though the Carpathian Mountains in Romania with ascents of 2,000 feet to raise money for the newly built bear sanctuary near Zatmesti. There are around 5,500 wild bears in Romania which are subject to both illegal capture and used as exhibition animals. At present around 50 of these bears are in captivity across the country, used as hotel and restaurant roadside attractions, private zoo exhibits, or used for tourist photos. Many of these captive bears are underfed and cruelly treated by their owners, living in cramped cages where they rarely have any shelter from the extremes of the Romanian weather. WSPA are now in the early stages of constructing a sanctuary designed to house all of these captive bears, helping to rehabilitate captive and orphaned bear cubs and return them to the wild where possible.
