We Support Nepalese mountain communities to improve health, education and welfare

Story

Help us raise £10 for every metre of Everest raising around £88,480 for the communities of Nepal. For example to rebuild a village school we need £15,000.

We aim to do this through a series of events that began with the Everest Ice Wall Challenge in Keswick and will be followed by events up and down the country.

Nepal Needs Your Help

The people of Nepal have been devastated by a massive earth quake and aftershocks.

Over 7,000 are known to have died. The final total may reach an estimated 15,000.

Fearing more aftershocks, people are surviving outdoors with no shelter or sanitation. Food and water will soon run out.

Remote mountain villages have been flattened and completely cut off by avalanches and landslides. Reaching survivors is difficult and dangerous. With few helicopters available many villages are still waiting for help.

Our Everest Ice Wall Challenge

Forty years ago Sir Chris Bonington led the first ascent by a British team up Everest and Doug Scott was part of the summit team. Chris and Doug are still going strong and will lead this current expedition and its team of fund raisers in a bid to climb the height of Everest at the ice wall situated at the King Kong Climbing Centre in Keswick.

The fund raising team along with Chris and Doug will climb the wall over 1000 times in 24 hours and be fuelled and supported by Chris's sons nutrition business Mountain Fuel.

In addition to this, the night before a team of fund raisers will be able to experience the cold hard reality of sleeping in sub zero temperatures and have the opportunity to sleep on portaledges or a four man tent, cooking expedition food and drinking hot beefy Bovril as they did 40 years ago.

We would love your support, whether this is joining in the challenge, making a donation or simply sharing our website and or donation page.

If you can't be a part of the ice climbing challenge then you can still 'Climb for CAN' by taking up your own challenge and make a donation or get sponsored. What ever your 'climb' is please share it on Facebook, Twitter or whatever social media you use and #climbforCAN encouraging others to 'Climb for CAN' and make a donation!

Why support Community Action Nepal?      www.canepal.org.uk

Community Action Nepal (CAN), a charity founded by Everest mountaineer Doug Scott CBE, is already helping.

For 20 years CAN has provided nurses, Health Posts, teachers, schools and poster rescue shelters serving 250,000 people in remote villages across Nepal. In the worst hit regions such as  Langtang, Gorkha and Helambu these vital community buildings been completely destroyed or badly damaged – but worse still homes have been reduced to rubble.

How CAN is helping

CAN  has trained Nepali nurses, teachers, building experts, and community workers currently helping with the immediate relief needs.

CAN has already organised food and medical supplies to be distributed, CAN nurses are working from temporary Heath Posts in their villages or at ‘disaster refugee’ camps in Kathmandu.

CAN is fighting to get scarce helicopters used to maximum effect.

CAN’s camping and trekking gear has been distributed to those in nee

Temporary school classrooms to be open by June.

Donations to CAN

Donations made to CAN’s Earthquake Appeal go directly to the village communities in need. 100% of donations will go to relief and rebuilding of these communities. CAN’s admin and running costs are met by other funds.

Doug Scott:

Doug Scott says “Lives have been devastated, homes destroyed, families bereaved and children orphaned. It is so incredibly sad. Despite all that has happened I am optimistic. The Nepalese are resilient and resourceful. But they need our help. Please support the ‘Sir Chris Bonington Community Action Nepal Everest Challenge’. Any money you give to CAN goes straight to the coal face. Please help. Whatever you can give goes a long way. Thank you.”
