Kilimanjaro Trek 2007 · 14 September 2007 ·

Through the operations of Grundfos in Johannesburg SACRED became acutely aware of the extreme poverty and hardship affecting the local people (including the children of Grundfos own local employees). SACRED uses the funds it raises to provide education, training and housing, doing all it can to break the poverty cycle.

Story

Gert & David are part of the team that will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro as part of the fund raising for SACRED.  The event is called "Climb for Change".

What is “Climb for Change”?

It’s all about changing a child's expectation.  Today in South Africa a child expects: -

o        To get education until he or she is ten.

o        To have no job.

o        To live in a shack with no water, sanitation or power.

o        To live in a squatter camp.

o        To live until they are in their 30’s.

It can cost as little as £140 to educate a child for only one year and in relative terms it is a low amount, even through University.  An education opens up the job market for the individual; employment kick starts investment in the local economy and provides funds for housing and infrastructure.  Groups of housing with infrastructure become a town.  In a town day nurses and health centres have a place and can be funded by the growing economy. As the town expands further a hospital will be needed.

With better education, employment, health and welfare comes longer life expectancy.

We believe by changing a child's expectation, tomorrow in South Africa a child will expect: -

o        To get education through to university.

o        To have a job.

o        To live in a house with water, sanitation and power.

o        To live in a town.

o        To live until they are in their 80’s.

How can we change expectation?

To symbolise this we will have a team from around Europe climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest freestanding mountain in Africa and indeed the world standing at 5,895 metres.

The climb will take place between Monday 10th September and Wednesday 19th September.

What difference will the sponsorship money make?

Our target for 2007 is to raise £200,000; this will provide the foundation of our projects.

Education is the corner stone with £140 to educate a child.

Housing is next £6,000 will build a house:

Using local building companies

Using local resource

Using local materials

Future projects will be in Welfare:

Stage 1 local nurses.

Stage 2 day centres.

Stage 3 hospitals.

All money raised will be detailed and published and every penny accounted for.  We not only have expectations for the children, but also for the communities in assisting the start up of varying businesses.

It’s your chance to join the “Climb for Change” together we can change a child’s expectation!
