Story
If I can beat cancer twice and do what I've done then other people can, too.
In September 2008, I cycled more than 6,000ft up Mont Ventoux in aid of the oncology unit at the University Hospitals of Leicester.
Here’s why:
In 2000 I donated bone marrow to my older brother Malcolm who needed it to be successfully treated for a rare blood disorder.
In 2001 I was diagnosed with skin cancer. After an operation and three months off work, I’d beaten it.
In 2004 after a routine medical, I was diagnosed with bowel cancer and was told I only had a 40 per cent chance of survival.
After five doses of intensive radiotherapy before an operation and then 30 weeks of chemotherapy I’ve beaten that too.
I’m now in remission and have been raising money for charity for the last 9 years.
I have taken part in some demanding cycle rides over the last 9 years for my own personal targets and also to raise money for charity.
Since 2000, I’ve helped raise money for The Anthony Nolan Trust, British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, the MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas (where Malcolm was treated) and Leicester Royal Infirmary's oncology unit where I was treated for bowel cancer.
I love being on a bike. When I'm on one I have this total release. I feel infallible and nothing can hurt me. I'm in absolute awe of Lance Armstrong who is my inspiration. I thought if he could beat cancer then so could I.
I have now been invited by The Geoff Thomas Foundation to take part in the London-Paris Tour Ride on 25-28th June 2009 and that’s why I’ve set up this page.
I’m asking you to sponsor me for this incredible 520km event where I will be wearing race number 181 from the banks of the River Thames at Hampton Court to the Eiffel Tower.
It will be a dream come true to ride past the Arc de Triomph on the Champs Elysee in Paris on my approach to the finish line wearing number 181 whilst raising money for Leicester Hospitals Charity.
Thank you in advance for your kind donations to this worthy cause.
