On the 6th of June 2012, Tom, Zach and the Cockleshell Heroes Support Team will reach the mouth of the Gironde Estaury leading from the British Channel to Bordeaux in the South of France. From here they will follow in the footsteps and paddle strokes of the famed Cockleshell Heroes of 1942.
The sacrifice that was made by these brave and often forgotten men, according to Winston Churchill, cut the World War II short by six months. As one of the most extraordinary and foolhardy assaults on German shipping during the conflict their bravery stands as a testatment to what human kind will do in the face of adversity.
Without the threat of detection by German patrols and the elements on one of the winter's stormiest nights of 1942, we're undertaking to cover the 85 miles on the water and 90 mile run overland in just 4 days. This is undoubtedly the hardest challenge either of us have ever attempted and will stretch us to our limits, both mentally and physically. Please give generously.
