Saigon to Angkor Wat Cycle Challenge · 15 November 2007

1 in 100 people have coeliac disease, yet only 36% are diagnosed. Coeliac UK empowers everyone affected, breaking down barriers, improving everyday life, offering trusted support and advancing research towards a cure. And we do it all so that one day, no one’s life will be limited by gluten.

Story

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page.

My sister Mary and I crossed the finish line in the 500kms Cycle Challenge from Vietnam to Cambodia on 16th November 2008 and wish to thank everyone for their support in helping us to raise much needed funds for Coeliac UK.

Coeliac Disease  is caused by an intolerance to gluten, found in wheat, barley, oats and rye. There is evidence to suggest that the prevalence of Coeliac Disease is 1 in 100 people, but the number of people with it who are actually diagnosed is substantially less. It is a hereditary condition, regularly mis-diagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome, and in families with the disease there is an increased risk of 1 in 10 being affected. Mary was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease 16 years ago and I was diagnosed with it 3 years ago.

Coeliac Disease can be treated by excluding gluten from the diet, but if left untreated the disease can lead to osteoporosis, gut cancer, infertility and stunted growth. It is therefore vital that an early diagnosis is given.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Coeliac UK will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Many thanks for your support.
