When the going gets tough, the tough ride their bike for charity

Well that's what Colin Barlow decided to do after discovering that he has a rare form of cancer called GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumor) and he decided to drag me along too!

He is planning a sponsored motorcycle ride over 5 days to each of the 10 hospitals currently treating GIST in the   starting on Monday 23rd November 2009 in hope of raising both awareness and funds for the Royal Marsden’s Cancer appeal. Starting in , the route will take in , , Sheffield, Leeds, Newcastle upon Tyne, , , and .

Colin 56 was born in and has been riding a motorcycle for a living since 1987. Starting out as a motorcycle courier delivering parcels, he now transports passengers as a motorcycle chauffeur in .

Colin’s condition started over 20 years ago as a mild form of stomach discomfort which steadily got worse over the years. However, it was not until 2008 when a liver biopsy was taken that GIST was diagnosed and thanks to one of Colin’s customers Peter Bullock, a Neuro Surgeon from , that he was promptly admitted to The Royal Marsden hospital. The initial prognosis was not great, with 2 to 6 months being mentioned! but Colin being Colin decided that he would just pick himself up, get on with life and start ticking off some of his “Wish List” starting with marrying his long term girlfriend Wendy.

Colin has recently taken part in a new drug trial at the Marsden and the outlook is looking slightly brighter. He now wants to give something back to the brilliant team of doctors and nurses at the Marsden and as he says “prove that you can still get on with your life and dreams even with the big C”
