Thanks for visiting Joe and Nick's fundraising page in aid of Community Action Nepal. We were able to summit Mera Peak, but unfortunately bad weather made Island Peak unreachable.

We'd be thrilled if you want to donate to this heroic charity.

CAN is a mountaineers’ charity which supports the mountain people of Nepal – the 6 poorest nation on the planet - to help themselves raise their standard of living and strengthen indigenous, community-based culture.

The charity was founded by Doug Scott CBE, the British climber who reached over 40 Himalayan summits, including Everest and Kangchenjunga. In reaction to the dreadful conditions suffered by porters who make it possible for walkers and climbers to enjoy the Peaks and Passes of Nepal, the charity began by setting up a “Fair Trade” type of trekking co-operative to ensure appropriate remuneration and adequate conditions of working.

Since 1994, CAN is involved in sustaining over 40 grass-root projects, with its work benefiting some 132,000 people. Projects include building Health Posts and Camps, schools, latrines, temples, clean water provision, and other income generation projects (including Community Action Treks).

Projects are driven by the needs of the mountain people, and only started in response to a request from local communities themselves. Villagers are actively involved from the design stage to completion and operation, with the equivalent of a third of a project’s needs being contributed through the provision of labour, expertise and local material.

Avoiding donor dependency and encouraging a sense of ownership, all projects are a joint effort between the mountain people of Nepal and CAN. The result is a sustained improvement in living conditions and support of the culture and values of a very remarkable people.

Joe and Nick recognize how lucky we were to be able to go to Nepal, and having seen how tough the lives are of people who live in the mountains, we’d love you to support this charity. Thank you from both of us.
