Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Hi, my name is Connor. I am 7 years old and before I was born I was deprived of oxygen which resulted in damage to my brain. I have been diagnosed with mixed cerebral palsy with ataxia. This means that I have high and low muscle tone throughout my body which constantly fluctuates and I have a noticeable tremor in my arms and legs, which affects everything I do.  My CP also affects my balance and even the muscles in my mouth which makes speaking difficult.

I cannot walk independently and I find it difficult to do simple tasks that everyone takes for granted, like using a pencil to draw and write my name, and a knife and fork to eat with. I want to be just like my friends and always work really hard to achieve my goals! Before I went to Rainbow House I had learnt to use a Kaye walker to get around and this was great as it gave me independence.

This means I can now run around the playground with my friends at Greenlands Community Primary School. I like being creative and making things even though it takes me a bit longer than my friends. Even though I am different, all the children are very supportive and I love going to school to every day.

Since summer 2010, I have been attending Rainbow House, a children’s charity that supports children with disabilities, brain injury or life threatening conditions. The staff there have worked very hard with me to give me skills to improve my balance and are now teaching me how to take a few steps all by myselfJ. I like to practice my walking skills at home just like I have been taught at Rainbow House. They also work on other important skills such as my speaking, social and self help skills.

This has given me confidence, but Rainbow House is also very important to me as it is very fun! During holidays I attend fun club, where I get to mix with other children with disabilities and also get to experience new things and I have even been to visit a police station which was very exciting.

Last summer, I attended the first annual Rainbow House Awards Ceremony and received an outstanding achievement award for all my hard work which I am very proud of. However, my Mum has just been told that Rainbow House is running very low on funds and unless my family can raise £3000 by the end of April their services will have to be cut and I will no longer be able to go there. This would make me very sad as I enjoy spending time at Rainbow House.
