This June I will be riding 1,000 miles on my motorcycle over 24 hours to support the Royal British Legion in the annual RBLR Iron Butt Rally 1000 with some like minded people. Supporting a worthwhile charity using my motorcycle? Sign me up! Many years ago in Canada I met some individuals in the middle of nowhere who stated that they were riding 1,000 miles in 24 hours to join a club. Ever since that day I have been intrigued. The Iron Butt Association is not your typical "club". They do not have monthly dues, a newsletter, or even a membership card. In fact, the closest thing they have to a membership card is the "World's Toughest Riders" license plate. On that note, to become a part of the Iron Butt Association, you must complete at least a Bun Burner 1500 (1,500 miles in 36 hours) or the SaddleSore 1000 (1,000 miles in 24 hours). 

Some history about the RBLR Iron Butt Rally

In October 2008, the Royal British Legion Riders (RBLR) Branch came up with the idea to try to break the world record for the largest amount of motorcycle riders to complete 1000 miles in less than 24 hours.  Plans were made for over 156 riders to concurrently ride a 1,000 mile route to establish the new world record.

The inaugural event took place from Squires Cafe Nr Leeds on Saturday 20th June 2009. The 1,000 miles covered either a Northern Route into Scotland or a Southern Route to take in the West Country. In total the event had 171 finishers which 162 riders and 9 pillions, which would have smashed the world record if the Americans hadn't reached the post first. However the event did break both the European and UK records and so far has raised over £33,000 for the Poppy Appeal.
