NICU is the region’s specialist centre for the treatment of premature or critically-ill newborn babies. Part of the Bristol Children’s Hospital services, it is the only ‘quarternary’ intensive care unit in the South West and South Wales, able to provide life-saving treatment for babies with the most serious and complex conditions.
The Cots for Tots campaign aims to raise £150,000 to provide vital equipment for the Unit such as cots, incubators and ventilators. Money raised will also provide a makeover for the ward’s play room as well as enhancing the breast feeding area and facilities for parents.
NICU currently treats around 600 babies a year with demand for the service increasing as medical advances enable more premature babies to survive. The ‘Cots for Tots’ Appeal will provide additional first-class equipment and facilities to support the NHS funded expansion for NICU which will create more space on the Unit. These works will provide a totally refurbished playroom, a new breast-feeding room, parents' accomodation, as well as two new cots to enable up to a hundred more babies a year to be admitted.
