a year on the pedle · 5 July 2012

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Well its almost a year on from my year on the pedal adventure. However the fun didnt stop there.  Having come a long way with my biking, I have continued training and become a very accomplished bike rider. Its amazing what you can do, considering that 2 years back I was 15 stone and drinking and partying heavily.  Iam now down to 11.5 stone and in the best physical shape of my life. So its shows what can be done if you put your mind to it.

However this isnt all about me its about raising funds and awareness for the Alzheimers Society.

The society is the leading charity for Alzheimers and dementia related illnesses.

The word dementia describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such asAlzheimer's disease or a series of strokes. Dementia is progressive, which means the symptoms will gradually get worse.

Why am I raising funds for this particular charity, I set off on this journey simply because I wanted to give something back, get fit and help raise funds and awareness because both my Late Aunty and Mother both suffered/suffer from this terrible illness.

We lost our Aunty earlier in the year and in the end Alzheimers had left her a frail shell of her former self.  She could not talk, walk or move. To watch a loved one go like this is horrific as they can live 10-20 years like this, this is way its called the long good bye.

In my mothers case she is still with us but we watch her deteriorate daily, and we can expect that soon she will not be able to remember us and even communicate with us..

We also lost our Dad a couple of years back to cancer, so as you can see it has been a very tough couple of years for my family and me.

So onto this years challenge.  Continuing the bike riding I aim to cycle form London to Newcastle (310 miles) in a non stop 24 hour ride.  This will include riding through out the night.

So please dig deep and share this page for others to see, and lets see what we can achieve togehter.

as i always say Smile and life will smile back
