Story
Well it's a new year and that means a new challenge for me (well more than one!!) in 2013. I'm starting with the Jurassic Coast Challenge, 3 marathons in 3 days along the cliffs and beaches of Devon and Dorset in March, which is going to be a big challenge!!
I was born with Hydrocephalus, more commonly known as fluid on the brain, and have had brain surgery 17 times. My Hydrocephalus is caused by a brain cyst i have lived with all my life, which is now the size of a tennis ball. I've also had a golf ball sized brain tumour and meningitis. I've had to learn to walk again, and could not play most sports which led me to athletics and then road running.
By rights i probably shouldn't be here, but there are many others who live with neurological conditions, both seen and unseen, in the UK. Did you know that 1 in 6 people in an NHS hospital bed at any one time are there as a result of a stroke? Neurological conditions are so common and wide ranging that if you don't know someone who is affected, you know someone who does.
I'm very fortunate, but many are not and so in 2013 i'm going to take part in several crazy challenges to raise awareness and money for The Brain and Spine Foundation - http://www.brainandspine.org.uk - a national charity who are committed to providing reliable information and support to people living with neurological conditions across the UK.
Diagnosis of a neurological condition, a brain tumour for example, is a scary and worrying time. The Brain and Spine Foundation can provide the information and support to help patients and carers.
Please help us to help those who suffer from neurological conditions by making a donation here. Thank you
Stuart
