£500 target reached! We are going on the rally!
NEWS UPDATE - 11/04/2010:
The Space Shuttle Insolvency is sitting on the launch pad, the highly trained (yeah right) crew are waiting to board and the continent trembles with fear as a rusty espace plastered with 4 idiots at the wheel is due to hit it in 5 days time!
As you can see, no expense has been spent in the shuttle conversion, the ablative heat shielding has been added to the nose of the orbiter. Unfortunately, we couldnt find any real ablative heat shielding, so we're hoping the man at the duct tape factory was having a good day as the car is wrapped in 75 meters of the stuff!
Moving round to the business end of the car, you can see the main drive engines have been installed. Once again no expense has been spent. Extra care was taken to achieve a look of understatement during this stage of construction, so much so, that it might look like three spraypainted flowerpots have been cabletied to the boot. Dont be fooled though, this modification alone will be more than capable of achieving the required 11.2 kilometers per second necessary for escaping the earths gravitational pull.
Major Ballache, Major Misunderstanding, Major Pisshead and Major Malfunction are your crew and their mission objectives have been set.
1) to rid the continent of all alcoholic drink and
2) to raise some serious cash for CLIC Sergent!

NEWS UPDATE - 05/03/2010:
Repair work is complete. The gear box has been fully reconditioned with a new pump, torque converter and fully synthetic gearbox fluid. The car is now ready for the rally, Rhod will be picking it up from the garage on Monday. It is now time to start making a big drive to raise the donations for the charity, so come on, dig deep and help us get to our target!
NEWS UPDATE - 25/01/2010:
Hello supporters! Okay so the Space Shuttle has been purchased on eBay for a bargain price of £430 exactly. She is an Automatic Renault Espace 3 litre V6 five door MPV (mnneeow). Unfortunately the automatic gearbox had failed but this allowed us to acquire the car for under £500 and thus qualifying it for rally entry. After the purchase Rhod organised a garage specialising in auto gearboxes to carry out the repair work. The only trouble was that the car resided in Petersfield, Hampshire and the garage was in Epsom, Surrey. The car, lacking the power of forward motion, was going to need to be towed – a journey of around 44 miles!
To save money, Rhod and I decided that we would do the tow ourselves using his BMW M3 and an inexpensive towing bar purchased from the local Halfords. It turned out to be quite an adventure. Everything was going very well until about 20 miles into the journey, whereupon the towing eye on the Espace broke off - on a hill! After about five minutes of panicking we jury-rigged a temporary towing point on the Espace using a spare piece of seat belt from the BMW. This we looped around part of the bulkhead and then through the eye of the towing bar. Driving after doing this was very precarious as we essentially had a very short tow-rope attached to a towing bar! It required us to be exactly in time with each other on the brakes ensuring that we did not accidentally wrench one another forwards or back. A couple of accidental wrenches did take place though and regrettably this caused some damage to the rear bumper of the BMW. On closer inspection we noticed that one of the two bolts connecting the BMW’s towing eye to the chassis had broken off during one of the wrenches! So we were now towing on just ONE BOLT! If this last bolt went, the entire rear bumper of the BMW would certainly be torn off.
It was gone midnight by this point and Rhod and I were both tremendously nervous and edgy. The last bolt could go at any second, we had another 15 miles to go and we had no choice but to carry on. Taking it very carefully and using radios to prompt each other on the braking we eventually arrived in Epsom – much to our relief. And so after delivering the car and posting the keys through their letter box we both drove home to get some much needed sleep. Hi everyone, thanks for checking out our page. This is going to be our fifth consecutive run with the Scumrun road rally. It’s a bit like the film Cannonball Run, an entry list of about 100 vehicles, stopping at campsites each night, tear across Europe trying to win the Spirit of the Scumrun Trophy.
Similar to the Gumball 3000, it is limited by one of two
rules, firstly the cars must cost £500 or less and you must turn up on
the start line with no less than £500 in sponsorship money for the
rally's nominated charity. In each previous year, we have raised money for the
likes of the Sussex Snowdrop Trust, Winston's Wish, Whizzkidz and CHASE. This year’s charity is CLIC Sargent who
provide care for children and young people suffering from cancer. Its a really good cause!
Over the years our cars have become more and more
outlandish, but this year we are boldly going where no scum has gone before! Details of our inter-galactic vehicle will be
released in due course so keep checking back here. We would also like to welcome two new members
to the team; Craig and Paul. Rhod and I
came to the conclusion that we don’t stand a chance of winning the main prize
with just the two of us – we’re both just too sensible. So we’ve brought in help! Craig and Paul have the job of causing as
much havoc and destruction over the four days as they can and we’re hoping this
could end up as a winning combination!

usual. For a £20 donation you can place
your logo on our car which will then be driven right across Europe in
April. We can manufacture the logo for
you, all we need is the design. Larger
donations will secure larger logos and location preferences, but these are
negotiable. Your logos will also be
duplicated on either side of the car. In
any case the important thing is that your donation will go to a very worthy
cause, not to mention gain your chosen logo valuable publicity through Fast Car
magazine and the Men and Motors digital TV channel.
