Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Last year, my best friend was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Until that time I had associated diabetes with Type 2 ie. people who were overweight, with presumably poor diets and little exercise. My friend was not in this category, so it was a shock to discover that 'normal', healthy people could suffer. Nikki is now adjusting to daily injections and managing a life that requires constant focus on daily food intake , taking exercise yet minus hypos - no easy feat.
I decided to undertake a challenge that would take me totally out of my comfort zone. As an ad-hoc and not especially good or strong swimmer, this seemed an appropriately daunting yet do-able task. Diabetes UK used to have the event as one of their fundraisers, but they stopped doing so last year. I therefore decided to organise a relay team myself. A female only team seemed like a good idea and in January, after months of planning, we finally confirmed the team of 6.
I will have had a year of training by September 21-22nd 2015 - it will have to be enough.
